I have been dreaming of fishing places I have never been this week and this  video reflects a want to try the Steelhead.  Thanks to Tight Lines Fly Fishing Co. for a great tutorial.

White Bass Report

Let's get the truth out of the way right now.

I caught NO WHITE BASS.

Ok now for all the fishermen's excuses:
1) Flow was too low
2) The river was heavily fished by other people who got to the park sooner then myself.
3) Due to isolation from the lake below the park because of low water for the last couple years white bass populations are dwindling. (A wet year would allow them to recover).

Ok well I did have some success with Guadalupe bass and Longear sunfish.  The good old Clouser minnow (olive over white over blue variant) was my saving grace.

White Bass Trip Starts Today

If you have been following Siren Flies for the last couple weeks there has been a lot of buzz from me about white bass. Well today I am leaving for that very trip.  While I am hesitant to expect the worlds greatest white bass fishing trip this weekend because of low water levels, I look forward to joining the Alamo Fly Fishers on their annual trip for the first time.

Marabou Minnow Fly for White Bass

The local hot fly for white bass is an olive marabou minnow in size 8 with medium bead chain eyes. I am relatively new to white bass fly fishing so I took a lot of local advice on putting together the various colors shown below.  I chose the color combination in the video for visibility and my personal devotion to flies with black and chartreuse.

I feel like there is a lot of room for more inventiveness for white bass flies. If anyone out there has white bass flies to share please post them to the Siren Flies Facebook page.

After editing the video I realized the hook is a size 6 Eagle Claw not a Mustad.
